Several pranayama exercises include pausing after the in-breath, after the out-breath, or both. Often, these moments are instructed as an imperative: ‘Now, hold!’ Holding, keeping, or staying is impossible without exacerbating tension.
Let’s look at ‘pausing’ differently. Finding ways to create space between our thoughts, rest within an active day or yoga practice, quiet time between breaths, openness and relaxation and a clear sky-mind for solitude is a productive, fruitful, replenishing practice, so important when our energy is high, so helpful when our minds are pessimistic, fatigued or overburdened.
