Join me in a new yoga (ad)venture in Guatemala. Casa San Juan Hotel is located in the village of San Juan del Obispo, home to the 17th century monastery and palace of the first bishop to the Americas, Francisco Marroquin. It is a short 15 minute ride away from Antigua, Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a city of ‘eternal spring’.
Tucked into the middle of a village, hidden behind corrugated tin walls, in a lush garden, Casa San Juan is a charming refuge from the bustle of Antigua.
The main house, designed and built by Guatemalan architect Federico Jimenez, features outdoor patio spaces to enjoy quiet time watching the hummingbirds and butterflies that are attracted to the many exotic, flowering plants and listening to meditative, cascading water fountains in and around the house.
To capture the views of the three volcanoes — Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango — you’ll find six uniquely crafted rooms with a private bath, space for working, studying or relaxing, and either a rooftop patio or an outdoor seating area. Fuego, true to its name, frequently emits dramatic plumes of smoke.
Day trips can be arranged to local villages, markets, downtown Antigua, Mayan ruins, Lake Atitlan and more. A cooking lesson is a tempting possibility. Seek Spanish lessons in lovely Antigua in conjunction with your yoga practice.
Our host is Ginger Hooven, an Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist who is available to instruct us in Ayurvedic Science. Ginger teaches regularly at Mount Madonna Centre in California.
