Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issues in Canada according to the 2006 Community Health Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing from Statistics Canada. In this video, Tama Soble of Esther Myers’ Yoga Studio discusses the natural causes of anxiety and how yoga can help establish and maintain a balance between anxiety and relaxation.
While anxiety is a natural and necessary part of our life, the stresses of urban living can lead to heightened levels of anxiety and the suppression of our ability to relax and cultivate peace of mind. Join Tama as she explores a number of postures and methods to ground the body and mind, release postural tension and ultimately benefit from the use of yoga to manage stress and anxiety in our everyday life.
Note that, while these techniques can help in dealing with everyday stress and anxiety, you may also wish to consult a health care professional if you experience prolonged periods of heightened anxiety. The Canadian Mental Health Association estimates that 1 in 10 people suffer from an anxiety disorder, however the stigma surrounding these disorders often discourages people from seeking help.
